First Class university and top North East University for sustainability (People & Planet, 2021). In 2019, Northumbria came 4th in the National People and Planet sustainable League. We have been Green Gown Awards finalists for 3 years and are ISO 14001 certified in environment management and eco-campus impact. Green Tourism Gold Award holder.

Corporate Responsibility

We are a Green Tourism Gold Award holder for our sustainable initiatives.
Overall the University have reduced carbon emissions by over 30% against a 2005/06 baseline and are on track to achieve a 40% reduction by 2020. We contribute to a set of global commitments and targets which aim to tackle issues including gender inequality, achieving quality education for all, addressing climate change and achieving peaceful and just societies.
We work in partnership with our catering provider in a wide range of areas of sustainability. Tackling food waste and embedding sustainability in the supply chain are some of the key areas being addressed at Northumbria and we are utilising software to monitor food waste in order to reduce the amount of waste generated at events. In other areas of event catering we offer coffee certified by Fairtrade as part of the Starbucks ‘proud to serve’ brand. We also serve MCScertified fish from sustainable sources, helping to keep our oceans alive.
