The gardens are around 17 acres in total. These acres comprise of formal, fruit, herb, walled and woodland areas.
Pictures within the house show various stages of the garden transformation. One side of the pictures showing former owner A Christy sitting on the steps with flag irises either side of him.
Earliest record of an ornamental garden date back to 1842 includes the croquet lawn. Most interestingly a canal is recorded on the east side of the house which was more like a long narrow formal pool as we would see it today. The only reference to this pool is around 1633 and would have been a relatively short lived feature of the garden.
From 1842 – early 1990s it was largely unchanged.
The Christy family developed the grounds and gardens further with the employment of designer Clough William-Ellis, who created water gardens and formal lawns, some of which are no longer in the garden. In the 1920s the gardens employed at least 20 grounds men.
The Chichester family who took purchase of the property mainly had vegetables growing in the walled garden and a team of gardeners who took the produce to Brecon market.
The gardens lowly declined and came into despair and were brought by Sir Bernard Ashley in 1987 who then slowly restored the house and developed the gardens before opening as a hotel in 1990.
