Rebuilt in 2022 after a £72 million transformation, the stadium famously hosted the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and with a permanent capacity of 18,000 (expandable to 30,000), it is now the home and headquarters of UK Athletics: serving elite sport, local clubs, and everyday fitness.
Alexander Stadium hosts major national events such as the British Championships and the Müller Diamond League and helps athletes progress from club, to national and international level. The historic Birchfield Harriers train and compete here, underscoring the stadium’s reputation for sporting excellence.
Named after athletics pioneer William Whiteway Alexander, the stadium first opened in 1927. It was redeveloped on its current Perry Park site and reopened in 1978 and was transformed again in 2022 for the Commonwealth Games. Whether for performance or participation, this is where Birmingham and beyond moves, trains and thrives.
