Wyboston Lakes Resort Joins the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) on the Road to Net Zero

As part of its ongoing journey towards a more sustainable future, Wyboston Lakes Resort has announced its commitment to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

This major step forward in their ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) strategy reaffirms its dedication to tackling climate change and achieving Net Zero emissions across all areas of the business.

Wyboston Lakes Resort is committed to being a leader in sustainability within the hospitality and events industry, and by joining the SBTi it strengthens its ability to reduce carbon emissions in a meaningful and science-backed way. Setting science-based targets ensures that sustainability goals are in line with the global effort to limit temperature rise to 1.5°C, in accordance with the Paris Agreement.

Driving Impact Through ESG

The decision to align with the SBTi fits seamlessly with its broader ESG strategy, which has already led to impressive sustainability milestones across the business. As part of their pledge, it will:

Set ambitious targets for carbon reduction: This includes reducing emissions across all areas, from Scope 1 (direct emissions) through to Scope 3 (value chain emissions), ensuring that the entire business contributes to the Net Zero journey.Embed sustainability into the business operations: Wyboston Lakes has always been forward-thinking in terms of green energy and environmental stewardship, evidenced by the Green Energy project, zero-to-landfill commitment, and initiatives like Room 2 Grow. The SBTi provides a framework to measure, monitor, and reduce the carbon footprint, while scaling up these impactful programs.Be transparent and accountable: As part of the SBTi commitment, the business will regularly report on progress, showing stakeholders and customers accountability to the targets set.Louisa Watson, Marketing Director & Sustainability Lead at Wyboston Lakes Resort says “Transparency is key in our approach to sustainability, and we aim to share our successes, challenges, and lessons learned.

“We are proud of our commitment to the SBTi as the next step in our ESG journey. At Wyboston Lakes, we recognise that sustainability is not just an option, but a necessity. We’re determined to do the right thing, and setting science-based targets ensures that our Net Zero goal is both ambitious and achievable."

Wyboston Lakes Resort strikes Gold again

Wyboston Lakes Resort is proud to announce that it has once again achieved the prestigious MIA Gold accreditation from the Meetings Industry Association (MIA), reaffirming its commitment to excellence in the meetings and events industry.

The Bedfordshire hotel, conference and training centre achieved the highest possible level of accreditation from the sector’s nationally recognised standard for service providers in business, meetings and events, after a panel of independent industry assessors scrutinised it against a robust checklist of criteria.

The process includes legal compliance, accessibility and quality checks of facilities as well as the customer service proposition and experience, ethical codes of conduct and best practice standards. To achieve the MIA Gold standard, operators must meet an even stricter list of criteria.

Suzanne Weekes of the MIA who led the team of assessors commented “I was delighted to see how much they continue to achieve between each visit. They have a really impressive collection of venues on the site and keep People, Plant end Profit at the centre of what they do, all in the right balance. I am extremely pleased to award them Gold again, and I wish it could be higher.”

Simon McMahon, Director of Operations at Wyboston Lakes Resort said: “To be recognised with this accreditation is testament to the tremendous efforts of our highly dedicated team, particularly the long-term commitment to delivering the highest of service standards across all departments. We’re extremely proud to have achieved MIA Gold Accreditation again.”

Kerrin MacPhie, Chief Executive, the MIA said: “We’re delighted that Wyboston Lakes Resort is again on the elite list of operators with MIA Gold accreditation. The iconic status is one of the sector’s highest accolades and goes a long way in demonstrating excellence to prospects, clients and employees. This achievement is no mean feat, and we offer Wyboston Lakes Resort our sincere congratulations on such a remarkable achievement that many dedicate a number of years striving for.”

The current focus of Phase Two of its Green Energy Roadmap is now approaching completion. Along with storage batteries, a total of 3065 solar energy panels are being installed on the roofs of The Woodlands Event Centre, The Willows Training Centre, the Waterfront Hotel and the Knowledge Centre, an investment of £2.3m. Award-winning conference, training and leisure venue Wyboston Lakes Resort has again been recognised as one of the best conference venues in the country and also as among the most sustainable.

It has been shortlisted as a finalist for both Best Venue (501-1100 seats theatre style) and for the Sustainability Award for Venues at the highly coveted Conference & Events Awards.

Marketing Director and Sustainability Lead Louisa Watson said: “It is so exciting to be recognised as a finalist for two such prestigious awards and it is wonderful testimony to the superb quality of our facilities and to the continuing commitment of all our team to our mantra of ‘More Sustainable, No Apology.’

The resort’s stylish Woodlands Event Centre was transformed in 2019 to meet the needs of the latest generation of delegates and event organisers. With a variety of rooms fully equipped with the latest technology, it is highly popular and busy with conferences and events for many sectors including financial services, pharmaceutical and associations.

Recognising that stimulating an emotional response among delegates, making memories, plays a crucial role in the success of an event, the Wyboston Lakes Resort team is committed to creating the best possible Delegate Experience.

To enhance the experience for delegates, in addition to the first-class conference environment, there are a wide variety of recreational and social facilities across the resort from outdoor team building on its lakes, an 18 hole golf course and spa to social gatherings at the new Sandpiper Bay.

All electric energy on-site now comes from renewable resources, reducing the resort’s carbon footprint by 65 percent and a total of 3065 solar panels are currently being installed across the site.

The results of the Conference & Events Awards 2024 will be announced at a ceremony on 5 July 2024 at City Central at the HAC, London.

Golfers can now play courses all around the world at Pinseekers Driving Range

Golfers can now play courses all around the world at Wyboston Lakes Resort since its Driving Range has been transformed and now features the latest in driving range software and technology.

The range, now named Pinseekers, features 13 heated bays, all with Trackman software. Each shot is tracked, and the data stored so that guests can monitor their progress over time. The software lets guests play virtual courses from around the world, set up competitions for long drive or nearest the pin and offers a wide range of games suitable for all ages and skill levels.

The technology at the driving range also now includes two robots, one to mow the grass, and the other to collect the golf balls.

Woody’s Lounge, an original new social seating area has been created for guests and clients wanting space to socialise and relax in a fun environment.

The refurbishment has been done using recycled and reclaimed materials in line with the Resort’s commitment to be sustainable wherever possible.  The wood used to create new bays, features, seating and tables was all from reclaimed scaffolding materials.

Pinseekers will soon be featuring packages that make full or partial-use hire available for groups with a variety of food and drink options.

Dale Hotel Shaw, Hotel Manager said: “Local golfers, those working in serviced offices on site, hotel, conference and training centre guests can all enjoy this great new facility either as a way to improve their golf at their leisure or as a social activity.”

Wyboston Lakes Resort progresses on Green Energy Roadmap towards self-sufficiency

Wyboston Lakes Resort has implemented phase one of its Green Energy Roadmap and embarked on phase two of its path towards self-sufficiency in Green Energy.

356KWh of solar panels and a 200KWh storage battery installed at The Willows Training Centre are already helping to make the Centre more self-sufficient in electricity even on some winter days. At the same time, at The Woodlands Event Centre, a new upgraded Building Management System (BMS) which incorporates the use of Artificial Intelligence is reducing energy waste still further and optimising energy usage.

After investing £650,000 in phase one, work has started on phase two on which the Resort is investing a further £2.3m. This includes installing solar panels and storage batteries at The Woodlands Event Centre, The Waterfront Hotel and the Resort’s Knowledge Centre. Once completed later this year, the Resort will have in total 1.4 Megawatt hours of solar panels and 1.1 Megawatt hours of storage batteries.

Transferring energy between buildings

In addition, systems are being installed to transfer electricity between buildings when appropriate, with The Woodlands Event Centre linked with the Waterfront Hotel and The Willows Training Centre connected to the Knowledge Centre.

Pat O’Hea, Director of Projects at Wyboston Lakes Resort said: “These installations will not only enable us to operate on green energy generated on site but also significantly reduce our purchasing, which is a major saving for a Resort like this.

“We are also currently working on plans for phase three which would, once agreed and implemented, make us fully self-sufficient in Green Energy.

“These projects are further demonstrations of the total commitment to the Resort’s philosophy of ‘More Sustainable, No Apology’ which we put into practice in every way we can, all day, every day.”

Through the resort’s Room2Grow sustainability initiative so far, 23,000 trees have been planted around the 380-acre site with thousands more to come. This scheme gives guests staying more than one night at Wyboston Lakes Resort the chance to chose to have a tree planted on the resort instead of having their room cleaned,

The Resort has been zero-to-landfill since 2015 and, to ensure that zero food waste goes off-site, has installed a biodigester, turning food waste into fresh compost for use across the site including for tree planting.

The resort’s commitment to sustainability has been independently accredited by earning gold awards from the Green Tourism Awards and the IACC, and EcoSmart Platinum Venue Award from Greengage Solutions.

Strong Prospects for 2024 at Wyboston Lakes Resort after Record-Breaking Revenue in 2023

Wyboston Lakes Resort is eagerly anticipating a strong year ahead after a successful 2023, marked by outstanding revenue growth and strategic achievements.

The company beat all previous years’ figures, achieving significant turnover revenue of £20.9 million. Gross margin and net profit also showed positive growth, showcasing the company's financial strength.

The highlights of the year were record-breaking revenue in both September and November 2023, followed by results surpassing expectations in December. These contributed to an overall robust performance throughout the year. The Resort also achieved key new milestones in business development and sales revenue in 2023. Contracted positions exceeded expectations, reflecting growth over previous years and outperforming set budgets.

Richard Smith, Chief Commercial Officer at Wyboston Lakes Resort says, “Despite a dynamic economic landscape with inflationary pressures, the company demonstrated resilience through proactive sales strategies and cost management. Together with effective strategic planning that helped to navigate challenges and seize opportunities, we achieved outstanding results.”

Outlook for 2024

Looking ahead Richard Smith is optimistic about the future, “The company has already secured substantial contracts for 2024, positioning itself for continued success in the coming year. Prospects are exciting.”

26,500 trees being planted as guests opt out of having their rooms cleaned

26,500 eco-conscious guests staying more than one night at Wyboston Lakes Resort have so far chosen to have a tree planted instead of having their room cleaned since its energy saving Room2Grow sustainability initiative was launched a year ago.

Steve Jones, managing director of Wyboston Lakes Resort says; “The response has been phenomenal, many times greater than we expected. It’s marvellous that guests have been so willing to make this choice and take the chance to help us with our commitment to our philosophy of ‘More Sustainable, No Apology.”

Room2Grow has already been widely acclaimed both in the UK and overseas, helping the resort to win three important awards since it was launched; the mialist Sustainability Award, IACC Americas Innovation Award 2023 for Sustainability Initiatives and recently the Conference & Events Awards 2023 Sustainability Award.

Biodigester

As the whole Wyboston Lakes Resort team are planting the trees on the 380-acre site, they are now using compost that is being produced on the site as a product of the Resort’s latest sustainability investment.

As part of a commitment to ensure that no food waste leaves the site, a new biodigester has been acquired and installed, turning food waste into fresh compost for use across the site including for tree planting.

The resort’s commitment to sustainability has been independently accredited by earning gold awards from the Green Tourism Awards and the IACC, and EcoSmart Platinum Venue Award from Greengage Solutions.

In September Wyboston Lakes Resort published a 4-year Green Energy Roadmap as the foundation for its plan to become self-sufficient by producing its own green energy using the natural resources available at the Resort, which will help to achieve its Net Zero Carbon Emissions target.

The resort has been zero-to-landfill since 2015 and is ensuring that zero food waste goes off-site.

Wyboston Lakes Resort celebrates 40th anniversary

Wyboston Lakes Resort will mark 40 years of trading from its site in Bedfordshire this year with several events and activities.

Purchased in September 1983, the 380-acre site in Bedfordshire featured a fledgling golf course at the time. The founder, Peter Hutchinson created Wyboston Lakes Resort to form part of an already successful portfolio of businesses. His entrepreneurial vision and investment allowed for exponential growth year on year, and four decades on, the business continues to flourish and operate with input from three generations of the Hutchinson family. It is the culture, developed from these family values that attracts customers from far and wide to the diverse, but complementary range of services. The resort has continued to invest and grow culminating in a record business year in 2022.

The resort now offers two contemporary residential training and event centres, a four-star hotel, brasserie, several bars, award-winning spa, 18-hole golf course, health and leisure club, and a water sports centre which is ideal for teambuilding activities. The resort also has a nature reserve, serviced offices, co-working spaces, branded training space, and land for future enterprise.

An estimated 250,000 people pass through the Wyboston Lakes Resort each year, and the business now generates an annual turnover of tens of millions of pounds. The business is a Real Living Wage employer and has also been recognised with a long line of awards including being one of the Best Companies to work for nine consecutive years, as well as multiple accolades for its meeting and events business, sustainability credentials, its spa and hotel.

Chelsey Hutchinson, chair of Wyboston Lakes Resort, said: “We have made major investments in developing and refurbishing all areas of the site over the years, with our customers – both national and local - our people and sustainability always front of mind. We will continue to evolve to meet their needs while actively contributing to support our communities.”
